Lymphocytes & Monocytes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jennifer

I have spent nearly the last 2 years jumping over every little bump, fever, ache and sniffle that Jacey has had. The last few months it has been easier to let go of some of the fear. Tonight my world seems to be taking yet another turn onto a path that I do not wish to take, not with Jacey but with Justin. He noticed a rash on his arm, a rash I know all to well. I quickly wanted to write it off as something else but it is not a rash that is easily confused for something else. Petechiae seems to want to become a mortal enemy to me. I looked at his arm 5 or 6 times each time hoping I would see something that was not petechiae but it was there each time. I got a flashlight but that only allowed me to see more clearly that it was petechiae. We instantly starting looking for more but there were none to be found but I knew that he had to have his blood checked so off to the ER we went.

Poor Justin seemed so calm about the whole thing but once we got him in there he was broken out in hives. He knows as well as I do what it could mean. The doctor (who I have a whole lot to say about but will do so at another time) drew the blood and the wait began. In my mind I was thinking there is NO WAY this could happen again. We have had our share of this world and Justin has already had his share of medical problems. The doctor came back and gave us the all clear and said everything looked normal. Justin's hives were gone in less than 2 minutes and a calm came over me. If that were the end of the story I would be doing one of those silly happy dances I do each time I get Jacey's counts.

Not more than 10 minutes later the doctor return to let us know there was indeed a problem. Justin's lymphocytes & monocytes are slightly elevated and his neutrophil count (ANC) level is slightly low. Nothing is elevated or low enough for them to say why. I asked for a copy of his counts because I just had to see what numbers we we're talking about. The numbers are in percentages which I am not familiar with. All they would tell us is to have him retested in a few days.

My mind is racing and I really hope beyond hope that this some how turns out to be some really odd fluke. I have been on a search since we got home. Saying to myself anything but cancer. It has to be anything but cancer. I guess we will just have to wait a see what the next test shows.

UPDATE:

The picture above is of a petechial rash that Jacey had during treatment. I have tried to take pictures of Justin's but the camera isn't working right. His is located on his right arm just above his elbow. It seems to have faded slightly this morning but he may have a few new dots. It is hard to know for sure. I have measured it and drew around it to help us know for sure if it changes. Is it Monday yet?
